Julia A. McFarland
Julia A. (DeLand) McFarland, 60, of Dunkirk, passed away Sunday morning, March 1, 2026 at Brooks Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Dunkirk on Feb. 9, 1966, she was the daughter of the late Cameron and Rosella DeLand.
A lifelong resident of Dunkirk, Julie was a proud graduate of Dunkirk High School, where she excelled in softball, track, and basketball. After high school, she earned an Associate’s Degree from Jamestown Community College.
Throughout her life, Julie dedicated herself to helping others. She worked as an Occupational Therapy Assistant at the Resource Center for many years, making a positive impact on those she served. In 2003, she opened her own dog boarding kennel, Julie’s Pet Palace, which reflected her lifelong love of animals. Her commitment to animal welfare didn’t stop there; in 2009, she founded the Pet Pantry Non-Profit Organization and volunteered at numerous animal shelters, demonstrating her selfless nature and passion for helping animals in need.
Her passions extended beyond her professional life; In her early twenties, she competed in bodybuilding. Later in life, Julie was an avid crafter, delighting in creating “Pot People” from clay flower pots. Often crafting while loudly listening to her favorite bands, Supertramp and Queen.
Above all, Julie was known for her supportive and selfless nature. Her greatest joy came from her children and grandchildren, who were the very center of her universe. She was always ready to lend a hand or offer encouragement, exhibiting kindness in all her interactions.
Survivors include her loving partner, Rick Saden; her loving children, Kristy (Shane) Carlson and Richard (Josie Rivera-Rivera) Saden Jr; grandchildren, Colt, Wyatt and Talon Carlson; siblings, Janet (Andy) Worth, Ken (Michelle) DeLand, Jim DeLand, Don DeLand, and Kathy (Tom) Buckley. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Thomas DeLand.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Julie’s memory to the Anna Shelter; 1555 East 10th St. Erie, PA 16511. Funeral services will be held in private at the convenience of the family.
