Lawrence Scura, Jr.
Lawrence “Larry” Scura, Jr., 82, of Waterloo, IA, formerly of Gowanda, died at his home under hospice care on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
He was born June 2, 1943, in Gowanda, New York, the son of Lawrence Sr., and Irma (Nehrboss) Scura. He graduated from Gowanda High School in 1961 and obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo, before completing his education with a master’s degree from Cornell University.
Larry married Rebecca A. “Becky” Welcher on Dec. 22, 1996. She preceded him in death on Oct. 7, 2020.
He worked for the engineering department at John Deere for 23 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 2000.
Larry was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elks Foundation, John Deere Collector’s Club, Pony Express, Iowa Youth Benefit Saddle Club, Aspire, 4-H, FFA, NRA, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and the Iowa Professional Farriers Association for which he was recently recognized with an Honorary Lifetime Membership award.
In his free time, he enjoyed rodeos, hunting, fishing, and going to the shooting range.
Larry is survived by a step-daughter, Sherry (Jason) Klemke of Janesville; three step-grandchildren, Kailah (Joshua) Willms of Lawrence, KS, Cody Davenport of Sumner, and Josie (Hunter Pierce) Klemke of La Porte City; three step-great-grandchildren, Vincent, Vera, and Wynter; an uncle, John Scura of Rochester, NY; many cousins; his devoted caregivers; and his beloved horse, Zoey.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lynn Scura.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pony Express or Easter Seals. Condolences may be left at www.LockeFuneralServices.com.
