Daniel L. Rider
Daniel L. Rider, a devoted servant of the Lord, dedicated educator, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, in Greenwood, Indiana. Born on October 3, 1946, in Silver Creek, New York, Daniel’s remarkable life was marked by unwavering faith, commitment to service, and an enduring love for those around him.
Daniel graduated from Forestville Central High School in 1965 and bravely answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Navy on May 3, 1966. He underwent rigorous training at the Great Lakes Training Center and ET School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Daniel served honorably aboard the USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War before his discharge in May 1970. His military service was a testament to his dedication and courage.
Following his naval career, Daniel pursued theological education with passion and diligence. He earned his Bachelor of Theology from Prairie Bible Institute, attended language school at Cornell University, and obtained a master’s degree, equipping him for his lifelong mission of ministry and education. In August 1977, Daniel was ordained, embarking on a meaningful vocation that would span decades. For twenty years, from 1983 until 2003, Daniel served on the mission field, sharing his deep faith and knowledge with communities abroad. In addition to his missionary work, he contributed as an adjunct professor at Franklin College, inspiring students with his wisdom and experience. Daniel’s linguistic talents were highly valued; he worked as a translator for several prominent Japanese auto companies. He also worked for FedEx from 2008 until his retirement. An accomplished editor, he meticulously worked on the Japanese version of “Talk thru the Bible” alongside numerous gospel literature pieces, further extending his impact in spreading spiritual understanding.
Daniel was a man of diverse interests and talents. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh, qualities that endeared him to all who knew him. His joy extended into music, where he found delight in playing the piano and accordion, and in the serenity of tending his garden. As a proud member of the Presbyterian Church, Daniel lived his faith openly and with heartfelt devotion.
Among his most cherished accomplishments was his marriage to Charleen Main on August 13, 1977. Their union was a source of immense joy until her passing on November 21, 2020.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charleen (Main) Rider, and his parents, Kermit L. and Martha R. (Grisanti) Rider. Daniel is lovingly remembered and mourned by his surviving family: his brother Paul Rider of Charleston, Ohio; his sister Elaine Foster and her husband Kenneth of Virginia Beach, Virginia; his brother Timothy Rider of Ridgeland, Mississippi; and his brother Andrew Rider and wife Teresa of Chesapeake, Virginia. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom treasured his warmth and guidance.
