Janice Carol (Stanbro) Ortel 84, of South Dayton, passed away peacefully on Sunday (July 26, 2026) in the Chautauqua County Home and Rehab, with her family at her side.
She was born February 21, 1942 in Franklinville, NY, the daughter of the late Roy and Marie "Mamie" Novak Stanbro.
Janice attended Forestville High School and retired from Lakeview Correctional in Brocton, where she was the cook. She had also worked in the same capacity at the former JN Adams Development in Perrysburg and was a home maker to her large family.
Raised Methodist, she had attended the Ball Hill Methodist Church in Forestville. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and especially spending time with her grandkids and family.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Sidney Vernon Ortel Sr., whom she married on October 22, 1960 in Forestville, four children; Elaine (Tom) Brehm of Groton, NY, Sidney "Topey" Ortel Jr. of South Dayton, Vicki (the late Donn) Kickbush of Conewango Valley and Steven (Peg) Ortel, as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren and two brothers, Ken and Doug Stanbro. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mamie, a son, Stacey Carl Ortel on Feb. 18, 2022, a grandson, Sidney "Scooter" Ortel III and brothers, Richard, Carl and Lyle Stanbro.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday (July 30, 2026) in the VAN RENSSELAER and SON FUNERAL HOME, 14 Church Street, Randolph, from where the family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday (July 29, 2026) Pastor Fred Holdridge will officiate. Burial will follow in the Villenova Cemetery, South Dayton.
