Today, July 14, 2026, our much loved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Friend, Raymond D. Mapston, slipped the surly bonds of earth and joined another realm after a long life with kidney failure and cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Susan Ellis Mapston, his two sons that filled his heart with love and pride, Clint T. Mapston and spouse, Heather Frazier, and Cory S. Mapston and spouse, Dona Long Mapston, two treasured Grand Daughters, Kelsey S. Mapston and spouse, Coleman, children, Sparrow and Sylas, and Jessie M. Mapston. Sister, Lora Lee Nye and brothers, William M. Mapston and spouse, Jackie, Russel E. Mapston, and eleven much loved Nieces and Nephews and their families.
Preceded in death by his parents, William T. Mapston and Francis L. Hall, sister in law, Nancy J. Mapston and Brother in law, and Sister in law, Terry C. Ellis and Jean Fay Ellis.
Raised in Arizona, he attended South Mountain High School in Phoenix and the University of Arizona in Tucson, followed by a long and fulfilling career with the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management. Ray was an active member of the Aggie House at the University of Arizona, rode bulls, and adventured with his house mates in Southern Arizona and Mexico. He met Susan at a university social event and they were married six months later. They moved together to Rays first Wildlife Biologist posting with the BLM in St. George. Ray's further postings were in Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, and Washington D.C. He was also repeatedly assigned to fight summer wildfires all over the west and was proud of his qualification as a firefighting unit leader. He also found time to coach a youth baseball team, take the family on many fishing and hunting explorations, and run many marathons. A life well lived, now at peace.
