Tommy Roque

Tommy Roque, 65, of Fredonia, NY, passed away Friday, August 7, 2026 at home, with his loving family at his side. Tommy was born August 1, 1961 in New York City, son of late Thomas Roque and Rose (Oquendo) and her husband Andres Mendez.

He was a devoted father, grandfather, mentor, coach, and longtime member of the Dunkirk community. He proudly served as a correctional officer before retiring and dedicated much of his life to coaching and mentoring young people.

Tommy was the founder and creator of Kids at Promise and 2XL which he created to give young people opportunities to build discipline, confidence, character, and life skills. Through boxing, tutoring, dance, art, and other activities, he provided youth with a place to belong and an opportunity to reach their potential. His impact extended far beyond the gym, touching the lives of countless people throughout Dunkirk and the surrounding community.

Tommy loved his family deeply. He enjoyed fishing, playing the congas, and boxing, and took great pride in his children, grandchildren, and the many young people he coached and mentored throughout his life.

He is survived by his fiancé, Stacy Elmore; his siblings Raphael Mendez (Carmen Torres), Sylvia Hernandez; his children Sandra Martinez (Victor Martinez), Tommy Merced, Destiny Roque, Hannah Burrows (Michael Ptak), Tommy G. Roque., Jacob Burrows (Kalee Halladay), and Nathan Burrows (Michelle Burrows), along with his 21 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, extended family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Leticia Roque.

Tommy will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his service to his community, and his belief in the potential of every person he encountered.

His fight is over, but his legacy will live on.
