Mary Notaro

1930-2026

Mary Notaro

Mary Notaro was born in Dunkirk, New York, on May 23, 1930, one of seven children of Frances (Feniello) and Alexander Biscaro. Her Dunkirk upbringing and the close-knit family in which she was raised remained a lifelong source of pride.

A 1947 graduate of Dunkirk High School, Mary received an award for her outstanding athletic ability. As a young woman, she worked at the George Graf Furniture Store on Central Avenue, and later at the Van Raalte plant.

On November 4, 1950, Mary married John Notaro at the old Holy Trinity Church on Ruggles Street in Dunkirk. Together they built a life centered on family and raised their two sons, Philip and Stephen.

Family was always at the heart of their home. Every Christmas, John and Mary welcomed a large gathering of relatives, creating a tradition that brought generations together and left many treasured memories. A devoted supporter of her sons, Mary faithfully attended their sporting events throughout their school years and continued cheering them on through their college games. Being present for her family mattered deeply to her.

For 24 years, Mary worked as a departmental secretary in the History Department at SUNY Fredonia. Following retirement, she and John moved to Hemet, California, where another important chapter of her life began, one marked by deep faith and a commitment to serving others.

At Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Mary served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and member of the Bereavement Committee. These were more than roles; they were expressions of a faith lived through service to others. When a parishioner died, she visited the family, helped with funeral arrangements, and led prayers and the rosary at wake services. Countless additional hours were given to the everyday life of the parish, helping wherever needed. Mary was also a Lay Spiritan associated with the Holy Ghost Fathers.

Her faith was evident in the way she lived. Whether comforting a grieving family, volunteering at church, or caring for those around her, she gave generously of her time and herself.

Mary is survived by her sons, Philip of California and Stephen of Illinois; her grandson, Matthew of Minnesota; her granddaughter, Maggie of California; her brother-in-law, Ronald Bartkowski; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, and by her siblings, Geraldine Lagrasso, Antionette Crise, Theresa Ark, Lucille Bartkowski, Clara Biscaro, and Joseph Biscaro.

Her long life, of 96 years, was defined by family, faith, and service. Those who knew and loved Mary will remember not only the many things she did, but the care and devotion with which she did them. Her life touched her family, her church, and her community, and the example she leaves behind will continue through those who loved her.

Memorial contributions in Mary's memory may be made to Holy Trinity Church in Dunkirk, New York, or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
