No cold shoulder for manufacturing

Even during a pandemic, it appears the ice cream business is booming. During last week’s county Public Facilities Committee meeting this week, members agreed to modify a resolution that would allow the Roberts Road Freezer, LLC, to purchase another 7.5 acres of land.

“There is a great deal of interest in doing more in that area (near the facility),” said Mark Geise, deputy county executive and chief executive officer of the county Industrial Development Agency. “I don’t want to say too much, but there is now interest in that brownfield parcel as well.”

While the IDA has been a tremendous supporter of the freezer facility and the expansion at the Wells ice cream location, formerly Fieldbrook Foods, city of Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas also deserves some credit.

Years ago, when there was a possibility Fieldbrook was considering options, Rosas reached out to the company that ultimately led to an $87 million investment.

It started with a city connection that needed assistance from the county. A perfect combination — and one that is making significant economic strides in the region.
