Health Department Small gesture will help local businesses

1 min read

Local businesses and non-profits will get a much-needed break from the Chautauqua County Health Department.

Department officials have proposed using federal stimulus money to perform free health inspections to restaurants, temporary food service facilities, swimming pool operators and others who require regular Health Department safety inspections. Bill Boria, county environmental health director, said the county typically issues 1,438 permits a year at a total cost of $118,000 to permit holders.

While that only averages out to about $80 per permit, it's a help to many small vendors who have had festivals canceled or to small businesses that were shut down for months.

It's a small gesture, but a positive one by the county Health Department.
