Taking notice of arrests, scams and students

Have you noticed that when they show pictures in the paper of people who are wanted, they are usually males? Sometimes there is one female. Rarely there are two females. I find myself asking myself, “How come?” Are women more law-abiding or don’t they get caught as often? Maybe men want more expensive things and can’t wait for them. Can we teach young girls to be good influences on males? Think about it. Maybe we can do something.

Now I have a question. How many people on Social Security got a letter asking them if they’d like an $800 raise on their monthly checks? What a dumb question! Who wouldn’t like a raise? Especially people like me who get less than $1,000 a month. My husband didn’t believe in it!

The question always comes up who is going to pay for it? The answer is always “the rich people who pay little or no tax.”

Really? How come they are getting away with that? They pay millions of dollars to congressmen for campaigns. Who can afford to look the other way at those perks?

I’ll give you an example. I used to get letters from an agency that said they were going to pass a bill to help people who were born before my age. They would ask for money. Now really. I’m 90 years old. How many of us are still alive? I have a friend who is 94. She’s still waiting. I won’t send them any money. It’s supposed to be a government agency. I get so many calls. I tell them I don’t do business over the phone.

For example, I got a call the other day telling me I won a cruise for two. Now tell me. Is anybody my age going on a cruise? She doesn’t know I get cruise-sick. I lost 20 pounds on a cruise trip. Everyone else got fat and I got thin! I was glad because I was trying to lose 10 pounds. Sometimes I think they are looking for old people who are gullible and will fall for anything that sounds good, like winning money, but cruises are out.

I’ve been getting good comments on my reporting on how the college kids who live in this apartment house with me are good to me. They all say the same thing. “We always hear about the bad stuff, but never the good, thoughtful stuff.”

How many people go through life seeing the bad, but not the good? It’s not too late. Do good and you’ll see the good in others and when you see good, comment on it.

Look at all the snow we’ve gotten and we’ll get a lot more! What an opportunity to clean porches, clean steps and even get jobs. If you see sidewalks that need to be shoveled, ask the old people if they would like their walks shoveled. They will be glad to pay you! This is a real opportunity for you to be a good neighbor! Open your eyes, open your heart and open your mouth!
