Another go-around

Traffic flow proposal causes controversy

A rendering of the proposed roundabout at Routes 20 and 60.

I wish a Silver Creek resident who wrote a letter to the OBSERVER had done a study of the intersection at Routes 20 and 60 before writing his recent comments. He would have seen we need the traffic signals.

It lets vehicles exit the many businesses on such busy highways. You cannot compare the Irving roundabout for it has much less traffic and only one business. At Route 20 and 60, you have a business on each corner plus 12 others very close by that would lose many customers due to no left turns.

I’m sure the state believes the medians are needed for safety. As one person of the many who spoke opposing the roundabout at the Dec. 7 meeting, I quote, “this is insanity, it’s foolish,” and how true that is.

Another issue is the Fredonia Elementary and High School being close, as two times a day, traffic is stopped to let out school buses. Think what that would do to the roundabout?

Several businesses spoke out opposing it at the meeting. The owner of the Paper Factory also had major concerns.

The cause of accidents is speed. Are you aware the speed limit is 45 mph? It is way too high for the volume of traffic from Routes 20 and 60 to Vineyard Drive and the Thruway entrance and exit. One person at the meeting said to do a study for a year with much lower speed limits to see what results it brings, as you said adapting to something safer is a good idea. Please write to the state Traffic & Safety Department to get the speed limit reduced. I did!
