Little things in the big picture

We take so much for granted saying, “That’s just the way it is.” Scientists sometimes leave what they do not understand to happenstance, or chance. In fairness to them, I think that very few scientifically trained people who actually believe in the big bang theory of creation. They just don’t know how to explain things in any other physical way, so they go about their business, while waiting, for a better idea.

I also realize that I am not qualified to make judgments on the scientific world, but let me suggest: if the big bang theory is true, it is because of the inevitable action of controlling laws that govern the entire universe. Let us remember that no one knows it all yet. We each get engrossed in our own specialties and interests. We are on a journey, in a system of growth and understanding, which still has a long way to go. We, like Ben Franklin, still have more to learn than we can imagine.

Does a woodpecker just go around beating his brains out on various trees until he eventually, by chance, happens to find a bug in the bark of one? He obviously has abilities that take him beyond chance. Who has been assigned the task of teaching the sparrow how and where to build a nest, and why she will soon need one? My wife used to put lint from the clothes dryer out for the birds to line their nests with, and they often found and used it. Who taught the grasshopper to hop? When we plant a seed of corn, how do some sprouts know to go into the earth seeking water and nutrients, and others break out of the earth and rise to make a cornstalk?

My point is that the whole universe exists as a completely controlled and organized system. We make progress in understanding that system, as we follow and understand the cooperating laws that result in a complete, sensible, organization of everything. This gives us the predictability we use for our advantage. Accidents occur, only when we humans make a mistake, or misunderstand what we are doing.

Predictability is possible because these controlling laws never change, and are not up for negotiation of how and when to operate. That is a blessing, as we could never operate them without messing up the whole universe. We are too preoccupied with the politics of our own power over one another, and best suited to allow the universe to run itself, as it has been doing for years.

One thing that makes everything so organized, is that every form of life from the corn or apple seed, to any beast or creature of any kind, with the only exception being the human, has been programmed to fulfill a certain life function, only this and nothing more. Perhaps the human is not an exception, but he certainly seems to be. We seem to have been gifted to take any direction in life we feel proper, but we are not free from the consequences that our actions may include. It would seem that we have been given the opportunity to observe, conclude and grow. We can build communities, and cities with skyscrapers, and explore the moon, or we can murder our perceived enemies by the millions.

I cannot, and will not, believe that man was born to be a murderous beast, or to subject other humans to servitude. Those who do so, or see it as their glory, are among the most ignorant of the human species, in that they fail to realize what they are doing, as Jesus said of his crucifiers as he died on the cross.

I do not believe that the progress of humanity has reached its finality, or that it will ever regress into blind ignorance to live only for the moment. It surely will be ruled consistently by the intelligence that created it, and the life, which that intelligence sustains. May God bless America.
