Parade insult a lasting impression

As first vice commander of the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council, I would first like to take this opportunity to thank the city of Dunkirk for the plaque the city presented to the Vets Council on Memorial Day 2018 at Memorial Park during the ceremonies that took place on that day of remembering those who gave their lives for the freedoms that we now have.

Later that morning, however, there was a major disappointment. A vehicle in the parade, sponsored by the Veterans Council, included an obscene sign that apparently stated “F— your opinion.” No one in the parade committee was aware of this.

Those in this car should not only apologize to this city, but not be a part of the parade again. This was a day to remember those who gave their lives for freedom.

Phones were ringing off the hook at City Hall because of these people. Attendees were saying that this was the worst parade, especially because of that insulting sign.

It is sad and disrespectful not only to those who attended the parade, but to the veterans who fought for our freedom, not knowing that some would take advantage of those freedoms. So sad.

Other than this, it was a clear and sunny day and a large group was there to observe the activities. I also know that the mayor’s phone was ringing off the hook because of that ridiculous sign. These people will learn some day there are people who have lived in this area all of their lives and they will not tolerate that kind of behavior from anyone. All they did was wake up the silent majority.

So I guess those who live in the city of Dunkirk who think that they can get away with anything are wrong. Just don’t step on the toes of those who have lived here and worked here for years.
