Brighter days not far away for Dunkirk

Commentary

This letter is in response to Richard Makuch’s commentary (April 15). Yes Mr. Makuch, there is praise and progress to the city of Dunkirk, Mayor Wilfred Rosas and his administration.

It’s unfair for you to blame empty lots and the loss of all the stores that were “once upon a time” on this administration. I am sure that Walmart and the internet had something to do with that.

You sir, are only looking at a small part of the picture. When you mentioned Townsend Street, I agree there are a handful of houses that should be razed, but then you would probably complain about another parking lot. If you were really looking for progress you should have driven a bit farther up Townsend Street to view all the nice well kept homes. At the end of the street you would have seen real progress in the new P-Tech Academy, which I am proud to say that my husband was part of its creation.

As for what type of landlords we are, please ride by 963 Central Ave. that we recently renovated and saved from being razed. I am sure the surrounding residents will agree that we take a lot of pride not only in our properties but also the neighborhood and that we are very good landlords.

You must be wearing blinders if you can’t see the progress all over city and town of Dunkirk. Starting with:

¯ Athenex.

¯ The construction of the new cold storage warehouse on Roberts Road.

¯ The upgrades at Point Gratiot.

¯ The upgrade at both the wastewater treatment and water treatment plants with the new water storage tower.

¯ Wright Park improvements with the new Splash Pad.

¯ The upgrades to the wonderful pier that draws people from all over Western New York and beyond.

¯ P-Tech Academy.

¯ All the new homes being built around the city.

¯ Increased tourism with the Great Boat races and air shows that generate a lot of spending money for the area.

¯ The anticipated new dog shelter and dog park.

¯ The expansion of the Senior center.

With more to come, Mayor Rosas has done amazing things with the hand he was dealt. In conclusion, with all the properties we own in Dunkirk and the significant amount of taxes we pay, I have the right to love Dunkirk even if I live in Fredonia.

Therefore, I am entitled to my bragging rights as they relate to the city of Dunkirk as I see all the progress. On the other hand Mr. Makuch with your negative outlook, “a cup half empty”, maybe you should fill it up and go for another ride in the city without your blinders on.

Kathleen Campola is a Fredonia resident.
