You can’t have it both ways

Commentary: Health-care crisis at Brooks-TLC

This is an open letter to John D’Agostino, OBSERVER publisher. In an article earlier this year, you wrote: “Kaleida Health, it must be noted, also has a role in the continued decline of Brooks and TLC. Western New York’s major health-care player appears to be calling a lot of the shots behind the scenes while almost carelessly viewing the financial distress from afar.”

Furthermore, you continued on and wrote “Kaleida has little skin in the game in terms of any monetary investment but it stands to benefit if Brooks’ fiscal hole gets deeper. That, for all intents and purposes, appears to be what Kaleida is banking on.”

What have you and your paper done to alleviate this situation other than offering a platform for people to complain about what is happening?

Now you and the people at Brooks are asking for our support.

Why the change of heart?

I would like to point out that just because a lot of rural hospitals are closing does not necessarily mean that ours must. What ever happened to the “can do” spirit that the founders of TLC showed back in the 1960s? Are we going to ignore the possible tragic results that may occur because we don’t do anything?
