Citizens bring spirit to Cassadaga

Thank you, OBSERVER, for crediting the Citizens for a Better Cassadaga for Cassadaga’s success as noted in the Sept. 19 “OBSERVER’s View.” However, let’s give credit to all who contribute to a better Cassadaga.

With the Citizens for a Better Cassadaga, the Cassadaga Lakes Association, the American Legion Post 1280, the Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department, Cassadaga Library, local businesses and the village of Cassadaga work together to promote and improve our little village. Several committees in the village, consisting of volunteer citizens, also join the effort.

As for public comment and input on the recent short term rental law, there were scores of people in attendance at Village Board meetings when the topic first surfaced. All were given an opportunity to voice their opinions.

Multiple letters were received by the board, as well. The village board and zoning committee listened and revised the law countless times, considering all public concerns. Five people — all in support of the new law — were in attendance at the public hearing on July 26.

The village board received a letter from the Chautauqua County Planning Board stating, “I applaud the village for proposing a local law to set standards and regulate short-term rentals. Short-term rentals are not a new concept, however popularity has increased over the last decade. Preparing for and developing local regulations for this concept can help suit your locality’s needs.” There were also five recommendations, which were discussed and most had already been done.

It cannot be ignored that short-term rentals can help to increase tourism, incentivize development and help generate revenue.

However, this could very well conflict with the small town character that our Comprehensive Plan describes. The village board and zoning committee worked diligently to create a balance that would satisfy short term rental owners and residents’ needs.

Cassadaga has been called “Small Town USA” a “Norman Rockwell scene” and a “slice of Americana.” It is this author’s opinion that most would like to see it stay this way.

Public input is always welcome. All are encouraged to attend Village Board meetings held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Village Office on 22 Mill St. Citizens for a Better Cassadaga meets on the second Thursday of each month, 7 p.m. at the library, 18 Maple Ave.

Cynthia Flaherty is a Cassadaga resident and Village Board member.
