In September of 2019, the OBSERVER published a letter I wrote in support of saving the Fenner House from demolition.
Shortly after the publication of my letter, interim SUNY Fredonia President, Dr. Dennis Hefner announced via email that the Fenner house would be spared from the wrecking ball.
The email to staff and faculty stated the following according to the OBSERVER on April 15, 2020: "The funds originally provided by the Construction Fund for demolition of the house will be used to secure the outside structure, which will include, but not be limited to, making the roof and exterior water-tight, installing proper ventilation, and adding internal structural and foundation supports to keep the exterior intact…".
Simply put, the money to tear it down would instead be used to structurally secure the building. Have any of these fixes been completed? I personally haven't noticed construction or repair activity at the property but perhaps it has simply escaped my notice.
I'm asking for a public response from SUNY Fredonia President Kolison, or any member of the College Council which is charged with the following responsibilities according to the College Council web page ; "… the College Council passes regulations governing the care, custody, and management of lands, grounds, buildings, and equipment…"
The college has owned the Fenner House for 60 years. It's been 3 1/2 years since the OBSERVER published the good news that there would be no demolition.
A status update on the proposed repairs, improvements and most importantly, the future of the property, would be appreciated.
