Auxiliary Meeting Today

The next meeting of the Cassadaga American Legion Unit 1280 members is today, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. This will be the summer dinner get-together. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share. A short meeting will follow.

Rebecca Magnuson With She Sings Cafe To Receive SBA Entrepreneur Award

MAYVILLE – On Wednesday, Aug. 14, Rebecca Magnuson and She Sings Cafe Restaurant and Bar will receive the NY State Small Business Administration’s Phoenix Entrepreneur of 2024 Award beginning at 10 a.m. at 95 West Lake Road, Mayville.

Magnuson opened She Sings Cafe on Sept. 28, 2023, and she is committed to staying open year round, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. The piano bar with Magnuson performing most nights has become a favorite for visitors and members of the community.

In February 2024, Magnuson formed She is Safe, Inc. of Chautauqua County whose mission is to assist victims of domestic abuse by giving emergency funding to victims, and building or acquiring a safe house. Fundraising for She is Safe will begin with a free Bluegrass outdoor concert at She Sings Cafe, Restaurant and Bar by the band South 79 on Friday, Aug. 16 from 8-10 p.m. Donations will be accepted.

at Ripley Library

RIPLEY — Local author Joan Wahl will be appearing at the Ripley Library on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. She will be discussing her publishing journey and signing copies of “Summer Love in Music City,”the first book in her romance series.

She will have copies of her book for sale and will be offering readers a few hints on the second book in the series which she plans to publish in 2025. If you are unable to attend the event, copies of her book are available at the Good Neighbor Bookstore in Lakewood, Tia Book Cellar in North East, and Werner Books in Erie, as well as online retailers Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Walmart and Books a Million.

Wahl is a member of Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County, Romance Writers of America, and the Independent Author Network. She would welcome the opportunity to meet with your writer’s group or book club and can be reached via e-mail at joanwahlauthor@yahoo.com

Food Pantry

open on Saturday

On Saturday, the Fredonia Food Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. until noon at Fredonia Presbyterian Church at 219 Central Ave. The pantry serves the needs of residents of Fredonia, ZIP code 14063, Pomfret, Sheridan, and Laona.

All guests receive one or more bags of non-perishable food. Number of bags given out depends on family size.

Native plant sale

set for Aug. 24

MAVYILLE — On Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chautauqua Marina and the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy will be holding a native plant sale, with proceeds benefiting the Conservancy.

A variety of native plants will be available for purchase from several local nurseries. Guided educational lakeside buffer walks will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Conservancy Conservationist Carol Markham will be on hand to answer questions about native plant selection and native garden design.

The event is free admission and will be held rain or shine at Chautauqua Marina, 104 West Lake Road. Native plants can often be difficult to find locally, making this a great opportunity for one-stop shopping for plants that are native to our area.
