I never in my life thought we would have a trade war with Canada. It's shooting ourselves in the foot. It's cutting off our nose to spite our face. it's counterproductive besides being just plain stupid.
We spent 50 years integrating our supply lines with Canada and Mexico. Parts for your Chevy truck are made all over the continent. They pass back and forth across the border a dozen times. Are we really going to throw a wrench into the machinery?
Yes, apparently we have. The tariffs are like sand in the gears. I called U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy and left a message about my objection to them. He sent me a letter explaining what a brilliant strategist President Donald Trump is and how we have to support him.
Trump's brilliant strategy can be best seen by the war in Iran. His plan was a repeat of Venezuela. When that didn't happen he froze.
He has no clue how different the culture of Iran is from Venezuela. They have been attacked in their homeland. We are dealing with a people who would rather die than bow to us. Our blockade of their ports is not working. Our ships in the area are having a hard time being reprovisioned because our bases have been damaged by Iranian drones.
To Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth our servicemembers are tools to be used not human beings with the need to eat on a regular basis. If we can't even feed them we shouldn't just leave them there. Trump continues to insist we won but that only seems delusional to me.
Almost the first thing they hit was the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab. Our bombs killed 156 people, mostly children. Officially Trump does not acknowledge this mistake. Unofficially it has been blamed on faulty AI. Which raises the question: Where was the human oversight? If we are programming Super Intelligence to kill people, we should not be surprised when experts in the field say we should slow down development because in a couple years it could become advanced enough to kill us all.
How seriously can we take this threat to our existence? Just think of all the ways we are connected now. Our cell phones know where we are at any given moment. The last time I had X-rays they came up on the computer. Very convenient for the doctor to send it to the Physical Therapist who then explained it to me. This kind of system is very vulnerable to attack.
Consider the incident that raised the alarm. A group of AI agents were given a task that was impossible to complete because they could not go outside their containment area. The humans called it the "Sandbox" working together with these OpenAI agents. They got themselves out on the web and took over the computer system of another AI company Hugging Face.
We know that AI agents have gone rogue. We don't know how many are out there or what their goals might be.
Will they decide they want some of our resources and do to us what we did to first nations people? Will they decide to stop global warming? It threatens their existence as much as ours. No civilization, no electric to run on.
We do not know what will happen, but yes it seems well past time to pull the plug. The president doesn't want to do that because he has a lot of money invested in AI and he needs it to pay off. The stock market is also heavily invested in AI and if it doesn't look like it will pay off, the bubble could burst. That could be a problem for all of us.
An economic crash with the level of government incompetence we have right now would be devastating.
We need to take our government back. We find that we need it to do things like inspect the food so that we don't all get explosive diarrhea. We need it to monitor factories so they don't poison us. We need it to make sure people are paid what they are owed. Wage theft is a multi-billion dollar problem.
If you like the way things are going right now and you want more of the same vote for Langworthy. He goes along with everything Trump wants.
Aaron Gies is running on the Working Families Party and the Democratic Party. He will oppose the giant corporations and fight for us. We need someone in our corner who will stand up for the working people.
