Community need

for food growing

Editor, OBSERVER:

The Feeding Fredonia Challenge, sponsored by the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, is underway. The Feeding Fredonia Challenge is a completely volunteer effort, with members of the church contacting local businesses, schools and SUNY Fredonia. Community members who donate non-perishable food items are volunteering their time and finances to help needy people in the Fredonia 14063 ZIP code.

Fredonia has more than 20 percent of its population living below the statistical poverty line.

With the cost of living rising far faster than worker incomes, the once-a-month Food Pantry at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church helps people with limited income. Over the past 12 months, the cost of food has increased 13.5%. Last year, in April and May, the Food Pantry was distributing about 30 bags of food each month. During the past several months, the church has been distributing 55 to 60 bags each month.

Please help the Food Pantry by donating non-perishable food through participating local businesses to help sustain our neighbors who have limited financial resources.

DAVID M. TIFFANY,

Fredonia
