Migrant workers vital to economy

Things you should know about agricultural employees and migrant workers in Chautauqua County:
¯ There are not enough Americans willing to work as farm laborers, even though employers are required to offer employment to U.S. residents.
¯ Non-resident agricultural employees are essential to food production throughout the U.S.
¯ According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, agriculture ranks as one of the most dangerous industries in the nation.
¯ Our local economy in Chautauqua County depends on the labor of agricultural employees.
¯ Agricultural employees who aren’t permanent residents are hired legally through the H-2A Visa Program for Temporary Workers.
¯ Agricultural employees and the farmers who employ them must meet many stringent requirements.
¯ Agricultural employees work hard, and their continued employment depends on their good work and behavior.
