Primaries have important role in election

Editor, OBSERVER:

When you hear “Election Day,” do you think of the November general election? There’s another Election Day that’s often overlooked by a majority of voters: Primary Election Day.

If turnout for the general election seems low, participation in primaries is even lower. Yet in New York state, primaries can often decide the outcome of elections.

New York has a closed primary system, which means you must be registered with a political party to vote in that party’s primary. Saturday is the deadline to enroll in a party if you want to vote in the June primary.

Being an informed voter is essential. Primaries offer a powerful opportunity to help select candidates who truly align with your values. This is where voters can weigh in on the issues that matter most and help shape their party’s direction.

Learn about the candidates at VOTE411.org, the League’s trusted, nonpartisan voter information resource. And there’s no substitute for meeting candidates in person- consider attending a League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County candidate forum when one is held near you.

Voting in the primaries is a meaningful way to engage in the political process and make your voice hear. By participating, you strengthen our democracy and help ensure it reflects the will of the people.
