Twenty years ago – 1999

Anderson-Lee Library is celebrating 75 years of reading pleasure in Silver Creek this month. People from Silver Creek, Forestville and Fredonia have been joining in the festivities. The popularity of the library is still increasing and circulation numbers are up. While computers and movies are popular attractions, patrons still take out books and are enjoying the recent improvements to the building.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Paul Bergmann, a former pro football tight end, recently spoke to sixth to 12th grade students at Westfield Academy and Central School and also at Ripley Central School. Mr. Bergmann, who is a member of the Sports World Ministries Inc., talked about his life and spoke out against substance abuse. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1986-87 and also played for the Jacksonville Bulls and the Oakland Invaders.

Forty years ago – 1979

A knitted Teddy bear designed by Mrs. Katharine Parmelee of Brigham Road, Dunkirk is featured in the current edition of Knitting World, a new bi-monthly publication out of Seabrook, N.H. Mrs. Parmelee, an avid needle worker, first wrote the magazine because she has a special spot in her heart for New Hampshire.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Irondequoit Lodge 301, F&AM, recently held a special program at the Dunkirk Masonic Temple honoring Dr. Harry B. Lyon, presenting him with a 75-year membership award from the Grand Lodge F&AM of New York State. This is a rare event in Masonry. Dr. Lyon’s Masonic career began in 1894 at the age of 21.
