Retrospective

Thirty years ago — 1991

Nine-year-old Joe Davies of Westfield stepped to the podium at SUNY Fredonia’s King Concert Hall and helped conduct a concert sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity. Regular conductor Harry John Brown congratulated Joe after he finished. The special concert was held with more than 600 students from northern Chautauqua County schools in attendance. The All-College Band performed.

Forty years ago — 1981

The Chautauqua County Resource Center recently opened its seventh community residence in the county for developmentally disabled adults. The residence, which is home to nine adults, is located at 418 Eagle St. in Dunkirk and is the second to open in the city. Dunkirk’s first group home, located at 539 Washington Ave., (the former Robert R. Dew Jr. residence) opened in 1978.

Fifty years ago — 1971

John Carr, formerly of Dunkirk and now associated with a radio station in New York City, has won top honors in the Radio Spot News class of the annual News Media Award Contest
