Thirty years ago — 1991

Student of the Week is Janelle Schuster, a senior at Westfield Academy and Central School and the Fredonia BOCES, where she is an honor student in Computer Technology. The daughter of Judy and Joe Schuster of Westfield, she earned a varsity letter in basketball and was a member of the yearbook staff at WACS. Janelle plans to attend Jamestown Community College to pursue a career in accounting.

Forty years ago — 1981

What many commercial fishermen are claiming could be their last fishing season opened May 2 in New York state. One local fish tug owner said there are two main reasons commercial fishing is on its way out and neither has to do with a lack of fish. One factor is the late start, beginning with this year, of the commercial fishing season. The second factor is a new state law that requires commercial fishermen to fish in at least 55 feet of water. The tug owner noted he would probably have to go halfway to Canada to find water that deep in Lake Erie.

Fifty years ago — 1971

St. Anthony’s School in Fredonia is presenting the drama, “I Decide My Destiny,” at the school. Leading roles in the play are held by Debbie Siracuse, Ronald Conti, Beverly Solazzo, Dawn Valone, Danny Petrella, Ray Coniglio and Linda Riewaldt.
