Recent New York State Lottery winners included Phillip Maslak and Carmen Barlette, both of Dunkirk and both $5,000 richer by way of the Win Four Game. Their tickets were purchased at U.S. News and Bells Supermarket, respectively.
Forty years ago -- 1981
William T. Colman, a Dunkirk native who went on to become a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, was so impressed with teachers in the Dunkirk school system that he arranged, upon his death, for a trust fund to give annual recognition to a certified retired teacher. To date there have been eight recipients: Catherine Morrissey, Ellen Damon, Paul V. Reber, Teresa Schober, Ellen Seyboldt Morrow, Mary Weber, Anthony Conti and Ann Weber.

Miss Cheryl Opacinch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Opacinch, 315 Nevins St., Dunkirk was recently awarded a doctorate in education degree from the Teachers College at Columbia University.
