Thirty years ago — 1992

Dunkirk Mayor Margaret Wuerstle said she will ask the common council to reconsider a proposed charter change that would extend the mayor’s term in office from two to four years and another that would abolish the existing at-large council elections system. An even better idea than extending the mayoral term would be to hire a city manager, according to Wuerstle. She believes that would help keep politics out of the day-to-day operations of city government.

Forty years ago — 1982

The Dunkirk Patriots Senior Drum and Bugle Corps took three first-place honors during the Fourth of July weekend. The corps traveled to Sardinia on Friday, Mayville on Saturday and Erie on Sunday to compete in the Fourth of July celebrations. The Patriots placed first in all three parades.

Fifty years ago — 1972

A gold medallion and a pillow covered with ribbons commemorating special events, both dating back to 1891, have been presented to the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1 of Dunkirk. Both items were originally presented by the company to Jacob W. Link, retiring foreman, in April 1891. They have been kept in the Link family for 81 years.
