Thirty years ago — 1992

Recent anti-tax protests on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation turned violent when protesters and state police clashed along the New York State Thruway. Two troopers were hospitalized and a number of protesters were injured during the confrontations which resulted in 14 arrests.

Forty years ago — 1982

Capital comic and former Jamestown resident Mark Russell, whose material is as fresh as the daily news, will present the latest in political satire this weekend at the Holiday Inn in Jamestown. As the main attraction at a fundraiser for Congressman Stan Lundine, “America’s star-spangled satirist” will travel from California in a switch from his stand-up comedy routines. Russell’s local connection goes back to the ’40s, when he lived at 34 Lakeview Ave. while his father ran a service station and his mother worked in a hardware store.

Fifty years ago — 1972

Cassadaga Postmaster Hollis Stowell has been elected vice president of he New York State Chapter of the National Postmaster’s Association.
