Thirty years ago — 1992

State Sen. Jess J. Present (R-Bemus Point) announced that Chautauqua County has been recognized by the New York Wine and Grape Foundation as one of the nation’s leading grape-growing regions. The Concord grape is the most widelyplanted native grape variety in the country and Chautauqua County is known in the grape and wine industry for growing the nation’s largest concentration of this grape variety. Chautauqua County has been called the “grape juice capital of the world.”

Forty years ago — 1982

Calendar Girl for the Month of October is Brenda Deck, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Deck of Ogden Road, Westfield. She is a student in the data processing program at BOCES Fredonia. A senior at Westfield Academy and Central School, Brenda serves as a student tutor for the elementary grades. Following graduation, she hopes to obtain a job in the computer field.

Fifty years ago — 1972

Chautauqua County has its first woman jurist sitting in Supreme Court in Mayville this term. Justice Ann Mikoll was sent to Mayville to handle Supreme Court this month, pending appointment of a judge to replace Justice Rollin A. Fancher, who has retired.
