Thirty years ago — 1992

Hyman Zeplowitz of Dunkirk has been designated a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Clubs International Foundation in recognition of his commitment to serving the world community. Named for the founder of Lions Club International, the Fellowship is the foundation’s highest honor. Mr. Zeplowitz was recently honored as a 50- year member of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club. As a Melvin Jones Fellow, he becomes a part of an international network of more than 55,000 recipients in nearly 121 countries and geographic areas.

Forty years ago — 1982

Miss Kathleen T. “Katie” Sommer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Sommer, 27 Curtis Place, Fredonia has been chosen “Outstanding Young New Yorker” in the program sponsored by the Fredonia Jayncees. Her selection followed interviews and speeches given by 10 Dunkirk-Fredonia high school students. Miss Lisa Winkler of Fredonia was named first runnerup.

Fifty years ago — 1972

“Pepe,” a 9-month-old French toy poodle, owned by Mr. and Mrs. James W. Taylor, 12 East Fifth St., Dunkirk is the Pet of the Week.
