Thirty years ago — 1992

Raymond and Diann Haney are newlyweds. On Dec. 1, they became millionaires. Mrs. Haney, the former Diann Herman of Silver Creek, and her husband claimed their share of Saturday’s $28.4 million Virginia Lotto jackpot today, the largest prize in the game’s history. Five winning tickets were sold, with each being worth about $5.6 million. The Haneys, who were married Nov. 4, didn’t plan to quit their jobs, although they want to use their winnings to start their own craft business. Mr. Haney works for McLean Rentals and Mrs. Haney works at Kmart.

Forty years ago — 1982

Carlton F. Gilray, a lifelong resident of Sheridan, has been appointed postmaster of the Sheridan Post Office. He began his 15-year career with the U.S. Postal Service as a part-time employee and has spent his entire postal service career at the Sheridan Post Office. A 1939 graduate of Silver Creek High School, Mr. Gilray formerly operated the Sheridan Garage.

Fifty years ago — 1972
