Thirty years ago — 1992

Student of the Week is Jennifer J. Halas, a senior at Westfield Academy and Central School. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Halas of Westfield, she is the secretary- treasurer of the National Honor Society, a four-year member of chorus, and a cheerleader and softball player. As a freshman, she took third place in the Buffalo News Spelling Bee. Jennifer plans to attend Houghton College to become an elementary school teacher.

Forty years ago — 1982

The year was 1905, and Earl P. Centner was one of about a dozen carriers delivering the OBSERVER to local homes. Mr. Centner, who will be 90 on Jan. 18, 1983, has been declared the winner of the OBSERVER’s “oldest living former carrier” contest by H. Kirk Williams, publisher, who presented him with a $100 check. The contest, held in conjunction with the newspaper’s 100th anniversary, attracted about 30 entries from as far as California. Other entrants ranged in age from 42 to 87.

Fifty years ago — 1972

The Ancient Order of Billy Goats Inc. is scheduled to meet today to consider an offer from the Dunkirk Urban Renewal Agency for the club’s property at 315 Main St., Dunkirk.
