Thirty years ago — 1992

Ronald “Pudge” Miller, Fredonia-based station commander and sergeant with the New York State Police, is retiring this January after a 31-year career. Stationed at Fredonia’s “Troop A” for the past 10 years, he has worked at several other troops throughout the state, including Auburn, Clarence, Batavia, Falconer, Leeds and Allegany. He joined the State Police in 1962 and by 1968, he was named sergeant.

Forty years ago — 1982

Bethlehem Steel Corp. today announced it would shut down many of its operations at its Lackawanna plant and some others at its Johnstown, Pa., facility, resulting in the loss of between 9,600 and 10,000 jobs. It was stated that 7,300 of those jobs would be lost at the Lackawanna plant, where 5,200 people are working and 3,400 more are laid off.

Fifty years ago — 1972

William Brazill of Brocton will be the manager of the new used car lot, Lakeside Auto Sales, it was learned today. The lot expected to open within the next two weeks, is located at the corner of Lake Shore Drive East and Washington Avenue in Dunkirk.
