A front page photo shows quarterback Frank Reich celebrating with Mark Pike and Steve Christie after Christie’s 32-year field goal in overtime completed the greatest comeback in NFL history — a 41-38 victory by the Bills in the AFC wild card game at Rich Stadium. The Bills rallied from a 35-3 deficit in order to move on to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road.
Forty years ago — 1983
Princess Rachel Margaret Conti, the first baby born at Brooks Hospital in 1983, made her debut into the world at 9:01 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, weighing 6 pounds, 15 ounces — thus winning the “First Baby” contest co-sponsored by the OBSERVER and participating merchants. She is the second daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. (Rebecca Smith) Conti, 20 Lucas Ave., Dunkirk.
Fifty years ago — 1973
Jesse Thomas of Dunkirk High School nearly did it all as the Marauders basketball team survived a late scare to down Salamanca, 87-79, in a CCIAC contest.
