Thirty years ago — 1993

The Dunkirk-Fredonia area will end up with two new Quality Markets under a deal approved recently regarding the sale of stores owned by the bankrupt Peter J. Schmitt (PJS) Co. The Bells Market on East Fourth Street in Dunkirk along with the Freshmart Store in Fredonia, have been purchased by the Penn Traffic Co. of Johnstown, Pa., and will become Quality Markets within the next two days. The company already operates a Quality Market at the D&F Plaza and that store will remain in full operation.

Forty years ago — 1983

On the evening of Jan. 2, the Fredonia First Baptist Church began its 175th anniversary celebration with a candlelight service, with the Rev. Cyrus Sprague, Area 1 associate minister, participating. The Rev. John Binkiwitz Jr. delivered a sermon. The church bell was rung 175 times by the young people as the congregation proceeded out of the church carrying lanterns and assembled around the water fountain in Barker Common.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Marilyn Ann Abbey was announced as the “Student of the Week” at Cassadaga Valley Central School. She is the 17-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Abbey of Sinclairville.
