Thirty years ago — 1993

The Dunkirk Local Development Corporation has approved a $50,000 loan that will be used to help the owners of Johnson’s Central Service renovate two existing garage bays into a mini-mart food store operation. The total project costs about $150,000 with the rest coming from private financing. The business will be named the Green Tree Convenience Store. Owner Steve Johnson said the new 24- hour-a-day business will create 8-9 fulltime jobs.

Forty years ago — 1983

Efforts are being made to preserve the Westfield train depot, which is slated for demolition by Conrail. The Westfield Village Board adopted a resolution to support an effort by the Chautauqua County Historical Register to preserve the railroad depot. The 79-year-old building, which was once used as a New York Central passenger depot, was slated for demolition this week by the railroad company.

Fifty years ago — 1973

It was learned today that Sheriff John R. Bentley presented a new badge to Officer Donald C. Szwejbka, signifying his promotion to sergeant in the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department. Sgt. Szwejbka, 39, lives at 68 W. Doughty St., Dunkirk.
