Thirty years ago — 1993

Four sponsors have been found so far to each donate $1,000 for the “Welcome To Dunkirk” signs the city plans to build at all major entrances to the city. The donors are Lake Shore Savings and Loan, Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency, Quality Markets and Tops Markets who have agreed to donate funds for one sign each. Each sponsor will be recognized with a plaque on the sign they donate.

Forty years ago — 1983

The Plymouth Tube Co. plant in Dunkirk’s Progress Park will indefinitely discontinue operations on about Feb. 1–a move that will permanently idle 68 area residents. The decision to close was because of a lack of demand for the company’s products due to the nation’s poor economic climate. According to company officials, the Dunkirk facility will be mothballed, although it is possible it will be opened again some time in the future — if production demands warrant it.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Miss Deborah Chalmers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Chalmers of Miller Road, Sheridan is a Dean’s List student at Erie Community College where she studies secretarial science.
