Thirty years ago — 1993

The late Joe Annarella was one of the most successful and best known coaches in Chautauqua County and that’s why he was chosen as one of the four inductees for the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame this year. Mr. Annarella coached six different sports with tremendous success at Cassadaga Valley Central School from 1954 to 1976. Other inductees are Bob Winterburn, Leo Corkery and the late Dan Feather.

Forty years ago — 1983

Silver Creek Mayor Harry VanCuren has appointed Agnes “Pat” Pfleuger as village trustee. Mrs. Pfleuger is the first woman ever to serve on the village board. She currently serves on the planning commission and is the village historian. A native of London, England, she was formerly employed as an OBSERVER reporter.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Lyndon B. Johnson, the nation’s 36th president, died today of a heart attack. Last rites will include funeral services in Washington and burial at the LBJ Ranch.
