Thirty years ago — 1993
The Dunkirk Zoning Board of Appeals has granted a variance that will allow a former clothing store at the D&F Plaza to be converted into an auto service center. The former Diane’s Fashions store will be turned into a Precision Tune Automotive Service Center, with the conversion to take about 60 days. Unanimously rejected by the same board was a request for permission to build an 18-hole miniature golf course at the Lake Shore Freeze ice cream shop at 436 Lake Shore Drive East.
Forty years ago — 1983
It’s official! Chautauqua County Executive Joseph Gerace has been named by Gov. Mario Cuomo to head the state Department of Agriculture and Markets. Mr. Gerace will replace current Commissioner J. Roger Barber at a salary of $65,700 per year. His appointment requires approval of the State Senate. Mr. Gerace, 56, has been county executive since 1975 when the post was created.
Fifty years ago — 1973
Lynn Ann Cody, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Cody of Dunkirk, was announced as “Calendar Girl of the Month” today. She likes to sew, cook and hunt, once bagging a 111-pound buck while hunting with her father.
