Thirty years ago — 1993

The Ripley School District’s efforts to create a safer school environment have earned it the Safety Committee-of-the-Year Award from the Utica National Insurance Group. The property/casualty insurer, headquartered in New Hartford, selected Ripley and 14 other districts for the annual award from among more than 400 school districts it insured in the Northeast.

Forty years ago — 1983

While there have been signs that the economy is improving, the effects of the recession are still very apparent in northern Chautauqua County. Other communities have fared worse than the region; to date, only one local plant has closed. Yet the area has experienced great personal trauma. At no point since the Great Depression in the 1930s has the tragedy of unemployment touched so many families in Northern Chautauqua County.

Fifty years ago — 1973

A fast-moving fire the night of May 27 all but destroyed the Revere Inn on Central Avenue, Silver Creek. The village’s only formal restaurant and cocktail lounge, the inn dates back to the early 1900s when John Webster, the original owner and onetime president (mayor) of the village, named it “Windsor House.”
