Thirty years ago — 1993

The Monday Evening Literary Club celebrated its 100th birthday recently with dinner and remembrances of days gone by at Haus Talblick in Gowanda. The program, “M.E.L.C. Through the Decades,” featured skits for each decade, highlighting significant changes that took place in America. The club, originally formed to organize a library in Gowanda, noted in its program that it is sharing its 100th anniversary with Beatrix Potter and Peter Rabbit.

Forty years ago — 1983

Student of the Week is Steve Sobczak, 18, of 509 McKinley Ave., Dunkirk. The son of Daniel and Sharon Sobczak, he is a senior at Dunkirk High School, where he serves as president of the Boy’s D Club and has been a top athlete on the varsity football, basketball, baseball and swimming teams. He has served as class treasurer as a freshman as well as a Boys State and student council representative. Steve plans to major in business or biology at college.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Chautauqua County voters approved $1.5 million in local taxes for new educational facilities for the physically and mentally handicapped and additional vocational buildings at Fredonia and Lakewood BOCES.
