Thirty years ago — 1993

The Chautauqua County Home in the west town of Dunkirk ended 1992 with a net profit of $186,393. The home had 1992 revenues of $8,486,155 and spent $8,299.759. An informal survey by the home staff showed that the Chautauqua County Home was likely the only countyoperated nursing home in the region to end 1992 in the black. It is estimated that across New York state, 60 to 70 percent of all county-operated nursing homes ended 1992 with operating deficits.

Forty years ago — 1983

Area youths, Suzuki violin students of Colleen Vanderzyden, recently performed on the Chautauqua County Fair mini-stage to capacity plus crowds applauding their efforts. The crowd reached such proportions that extra bleachers had to be put in place for the 30-minute performance. Ages 2 through 16, the young people played mostly folk tunes. Among the budding violinists were Michael Rado of Fredonia, along with Caleb Babcock, Crystal Swanson, Anthony Leva and Jillian Gopalan.

Fifty years ago — 1973

According to the latest figures, retirement benefits for village of Fredonia employees have increased 366 percent from 1965 to this year and are the highest of any municipality in Chautauqua County.
