Thirty years ago — 1993
A total of 100 fire companies from four counties have registered for the 85th annual Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen’s convention to be held in Westfield Aug. 4-7. The event, which is open to the public, is being hosted by the Westfield Fire Department. Recent Westfield High School graduate Eric Roggenbaum was presented with a golf shirt, baseball cap and U.S. savings bond for designing the winning logo for this year’s convention.
Forty years ago — 1983
Members of the board of directors of the Darwin R. Barker Library in Fredonia at their annual meeting voted to name the Barker Gallery, which will be in the restored and expanded library historical museum, the Louise F. Belden Gallery in memory of their “revered and beloved” fellow board member. Miss Belden was described as “a lady of exceptional character and superior intellect who brought to the Darwin R. Barker Library, during her 26 years of volunteer service, new dimensions to the terms loyalty and dedication.” She was a moving force in bringing the museum, her first love, to its present and highest level of achievement.
Fifty years ago — 1973
William H. Nelson of Silver Creek was elected New York United Spanish War Veterans commander. He is 93 years old and the only remaining member of the Spanish War Vets Post 107 in Dunkirk.
