Thirty years ago — 1993

The Chautauqua Italian American Organization will hold its first Italian Festival on Sept. 25 at Floral Hall, Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, Dunkirk. The event will feature a variety of authentic Italian entertainment, food, arts and crafts, demonstrations, dancers and an Italian folklore storyteller. Visitors will be treated to demonstrations of pasta making, artwork and floral arranging. Delicious homemade Italian foods and pastries will be available.

Forty years ago — 1983

The Fredonia Central School Board voted unanimously to appoint Dr. James M. Merrins as district superintendent, effective Oct. 1. He will receive a salary of $42,000 for the first year of a three-year contract. Dr. Merrins, 38, has been superintendent of the Honeoye Central Schools near Rochester since 1979.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Orders to halt the bombing of Cambodia by midnight tonight went out today from a peaceful Marine Corps base overlooking Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. This will end more than a decade of U.S. combat involvement in Southeast Asia and 160 consecutive days of an intensified air campaign in Cambodia.
