Thirty years ago — 1993

Chairman and chief executive officer of the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. William Davis told the OBSERVER today that at the current time the Dunkirk facility is one of the company’s most cost effective plants and things that could affect this status would be increases in the cost of implementing environmental controls and significant increases in property taxes. As for what the future holds, Davis said the Dunkirk plant is in the company’s future plans. He also said another effort with nuclear power is not likely.

Forty years ago — 1983

In an OBSERVER photo, Faith Stelmach of Lily Dale holds a chinook salmon weighing 28 pounds, 12 ounces which she caught with a silver J-plug. The fish is the third largest chinook salmon entered in the Orleans County Fishing Derby. Her husband Jim used a silver alpena diamondspoon to land a 13 pound, nine ounce brown trout the same day. It is the largest such fish entered in the derby. The Stelmachs were fishing aboard their boat, The Intruder.

Fifty years ago — 1973

A gala dance for the benefit of and featuring the Deutschmeisters of Westfield will be held in Floral Hall in Dunkirk to raise funds to enable the orchestra to participate in the annual “Oktoberfest” in Munich, Germany.
