Thirty years ago — 1993
The powerlifting team from Darwin’s Health Club won another title at the Greater Buffalo Bench Press competition recently at Maryvale High School. Dave Kyser, Mike O’Hara and Keith Naslund led Darwin’s with first place finishes in their respective weight classes. A state champion, Kyser benched 325 in the master’s category. He set the state record of 340 in last year’s competition. Naslund lifted 440 in the 242-lb. class while O’Hara benched 285 in the teenage 148-lb. weight class.
Forty years ago — 1983
The village of Forestville is marking its 175th anniversary with an Apple Festival. The year was 1808 when Jehiel Moore found his way through the thick brush and made a trail from what was known as the Lake Erie Road to the wooded and untouched area which would become the village of Forestville. Mr. Moore built a cabin and a sawmill. He most likely founded what most motorists know as Route 428 from Silver Creek to Forestville.
Fifty years ago — 1973
The Buffalo Bills, one of the true surprises of the 1973 season, will play the Miami Dolphins in Miami this Sunday to determine which team will take first in the American Conference East.
