Thirty years ago — 1993

The Northern Chautauqua Chamber of Commerce has selected Nog Inc., President Bruce H. Ritenberg III as its 1993 Person of the Year. He will receive his award during the 12th annual chamber award. Mr. Ritenberg was the unanimous choice of the chamber’s regional executive board. Nog is a family-owned and operated business located in Dunkirk which manufactures variegating bases, sauces, flavors, syrups and ice cream bar novelty coatings, selling primarily to the dairy industry.

Forty years ago — 1983

David Hornburg, the “Tire Man” of Sinclairville, plans to convert scrap tires into oil that he says can be refined into diesel fuel. There are an estimated three million tires piled on his Route 60 property south of Cassadaga. Mr. Hornburg has been accumulating the tires for six years and fully expects to go ahead with his plans to convert the tires into oil, beginning next spring. He has been cited by the state for operating an illegal landfill and is scheduled to face the charge in Charlotte Town Court this week.
