Thirty years ago — 1993

Pumpkins of all shapes and monstrous sizes are rolling onto Ray Waterman’s farm today for the 11th annual World Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Collins, the goal of which is to produce vegetables that might feel at home in an H.G. Wells novel. The current record holder is an 827-pound pumpkin grown in Washington. About 100 growers will try to break that record today. The goal of the event is to grow a 1,000-pound pumpkin by the end of the decade.

Forty years ago — 1983

It was a scene from the olden days at the Elwin “Bub” Cross farm on Alleghany Road in Forestville. Members of the Collins Draft Horse Club participated in a “corn cutting and silo filling” day at the farm. Teams of horses and old-fashioned equipment brought back memories of “the way it used to be” at the farm. Many of those watching were amazed at the work a good team of horses and a driver can do.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Veterans of World War I, Dunkirk Barracks and Auxiliary 1999, surprised Commander and Mrs. Stephen Kalfas at a luncheon meeting by presenting them with a large cake in honor of their 49th wedding anniversary.
