One of America’s most unusual college presidents will give the annual address for the Academic Convocation at SUNY Fredonia. Dr. Leon Botstein, the lively and intellectual president of Bard College, will present the lecture, “Education in the Year 2000.” At age 23, Dr. Botstein became the whiz kid of college presidents when he took the helm at Franconia College in New Hampshire. Four years later, he was hired as president of Bard College, where he has been for the past 19 years.

Dunkirk Police Officer John Roesler was recently presented with a citation by Dunkirk Mayor Edwin Gregoreski recognizing his role in saving the life of a 4-yearold Pennsylvania girl over the Labor Day weekend. Roesler was camping at a campground near Westfield when the girl was found unconscious, lying face down in a wading pool. He and an off-duty firefighter gave the child mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the local emergency squad arrived to rush her to the hospital where she was revived and later released.
