Thirty years ago — 1993

State Aging Director Jane G. Gould announced today the appointment of Claire Penfold to the New York State Office for the Aging’s Older Americans Act Program Advisory Committee. Mrs. Penfold, a Fredonia resident, will advise the director and staff of the State Office for the Aging on matters of policy and administration of the federal Older Americans Act at the state and local level. Director Gould noted that Mrs. Penfold was selected based upon her “significant contribution and commitment as an effective advocate for older New Yorkers.”

Forty years ago — 1983

The Dunkirk Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a zoning variance that will make it possible for the Dunkirk Eagles Club to purchase and use the former YMCA building on the Dunkirk-Fredonia municipal line. The board’s approval, coupled with a similar variance by the village of Fredonia recently, clears the way for the sale of the building by its owner, Empire of America Savings Bank, to the Eagles Club.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Robin S. Schoener of Westfield was presented with the Ruth Callahan Award by Dr. Dallas Beal, president of Fredonia State University College. The award is presented annually to an outstanding freshman at the college.
